Art in Our City Exhibit is Now Open

The Frauenthal Center and the Century Club Center have teamed up to present downtown Muskegon’s first annual Art in Our City exhibit from June 1, 2014 to August 20, 2014. Art in Our City is an invitational exhibit for artists whose works were entered, but not selected, for the 86th Regional Exhibition at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Two jurors viewed the art submissions from the Regional Exhibition and chose works for potential exhibition in Art in Our City.

On Thursday, 19th June from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM at the Frauenthal Center’s Bettye Clark-Cannon Gallery and at the Century Club Center, an opening reception will be held for the Art in Our City exhibition. Artists’ awards will be presented at 7:00 PM at the Bettye Clark-Cannon Gallery. The awards include 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and three honorable mentions. The Art in Our City reception was designed to follow the Muskegon Museum of Art’s "Meet the Artists" event, so visitors can view both exhibits easily by walking from one venue to the next.

The Art in Our City exhibition features 48 original works of art.

The exhibition and the reception are free events open to the public.

“Art In Our City allows artists to exhibit their work in a show that complements the Muskegon Museum of Art’s 86th Regional Exhibition and spreads art into the downtown Muskegon community,” commented Polly Doctor, Special Project Coordinator for the Frauenthal Center.

At the same time, Gary Post, owner of the Century Club Center, is establishing an exhibit space with the Red Lotus Gallery in his facility, and he offered gallery space for the Art in Our City exhibit.

Gary Post stated, “We are excited about this exhibit and look forward to it becoming an annual event in downtown Muskegon’s art life.”

Jurors for the Art in Our City exhibit were Grand Rapids artists and instructors Tamara H. Fox, MFA, and Stephanie Wooster, MFA. Shannon M. Mullally, MFA, Ph.D., is authoring the exhibit catalog and internet information. She has currently displayed pieces in the exhibit at

Dr. Shannon M. Mullally commented, “Art in Our City celebrates the diversity of Michigan artists, and yet, there is something in each piece that speaks to me about Michigan. You will have to see for yourself if you agree with me! As for showcasing the exhibit on Pinterest—that seemed like a natural extension of the spirit of the exhibit—to let the work spill beyond the walls of galleries.”
